Belly Dance is therapeutic and it can decrease the effects of aging by enhancing the following skills
Endurance- the ability to sustain an activity over a period of time.
Posture- in a standing position the body is naturally, but not rigidly, straight, and that in a sitting position the back is comfortably straight. Good standing and sitting posture helps promote normal functioning of the body's organs and increases the efficiency of the muscles, thereby minimizing fatigue.
Balance- system of reflexes that maintains body stability, triggered by potentially destabilizing internal (within body) and external (acting on the body) forces
Vestibular System- The vestibular organ consists of the membranous saccule and utricle and semicircular canals. The semicircular canals contain balance end organs called cristae and the saccule and utricle contain similar end organs called maculae. The organ is essential in the maintenance of balance.
Proprioception- The subconscious sensation of body and limb movement and position, obtained from non-visual sensory input from muscle spindles and joint capsules
Coordination- the harmonious working together, especially of several muscles or muscle groups in the execution of complicated movements.
Strength-ability to exert force against resistance.
Flexibility- The range of movement around a joint; dependent on a number of factors, including the size and shape of the bones, the ability of tendons to stretch, the condition of the ligaments, normal joint mechanics, soft tissue mobility and extensibility of the muscles.
Agility- the ability to accelerate, decelerate, stabilize, and change directions quickly while maintaining proper body posture.
